Course overview
The Sustainable Large Goods Vehicle (LGV) Driver C + E programme is designed to prepare individuals for a professional driving career with an emphasis on safety, efficiency, and environmental responsibility. This comprehensive training includes a free Category C licence with Driver CPC certification and equips learners to deliver goods reliably across diverse sectors, from global logistics and military supply chains to private and public organisations. Learners may specialise in areas such as food distribution, hazardous materials, import/export, or sustainable freight operations, often working independently across varied and sometimes unsociable shift patterns.
Throughout the programme, participants will gain expertise in traffic legislation, load restraint, and vehicle maintenance, with a strong focus on eco-friendly driving techniques and fuel efficiency. Learners will develop their understanding of sustainable logistics practices and master industry-recognised systems while continuing to deliver excellent customer service. Effective communication and collaboration with transport planners, loaders, managers, and end users are central to the role.
Upon completion, learners will hold a full Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (Driver CPC), meeting all legal driving standards and contributing to a greener, more efficient logistics sector. This qualification empowers participants to confidently operate LGVs while playing an active role in promoting sustainability and reducing the environmental impact of transport operations.
The learner journey
1. 10 months on-programme – This is when the individual will learn the skills, knowledge and behaviours which will support them for their End-Point Assessment. The learner could partake in a combination of activities, such as classroom based sessions, mentoring, shadowing, bespoke resources and off-site visits in order to support their learning and development.
From 1 August 2025, apprentices must complete at least 187 hours of off-the-job (OTJ) training over a minimum of 8 months, with some standards requiring more for those without prior learning. Learn more about OTJ training hours.
2. Gateway – After the 10 months teaching and learning, you, your training provider and the learner will review the learners journey and decide whether it is the right time for the on-programme assessment.
3. End-Point Assessment – This is when your learner will need to demonstrate they have learnt the required knowledge, skills and behaviours, through an on demand knowledge test, a professional discussion, practical observation and business project.
