Course overview

The Sustainable Team Leader programme is designed for individuals in first line management roles who are responsible for leading teams to deliver clearly defined outcomes, while embedding sustainable practices into their leadership approach. Whether managing a small group or a larger team, this programme equips learners with the skills to provide clear direction, make responsible decisions, and guide their teams toward achieving goals in a way that supports long-term environmental, social, and economic sustainability.

Sustainable team leaders operate across a variety of sectors, including private, public, and third sector organisations. While specific duties may vary by industry, the core knowledge, skills, and behaviours required remain the same. This programme focuses on the essential principles of effective team leadership, while also encouraging learners to consider the wider impact of their actions—promoting ethical decision-making, resource efficiency, and inclusive leadership.

Throughout the programme, learners will develop key capabilities in managing people and projects, planning workloads, and building strong internal and external relationships, all with sustainability in mind. The programme also covers how to deliver operational plans that consider environmental and social factors, resolve challenges through collaborative and forward-thinking approaches, and create a positive team culture that supports continuous improvement and responsible leadership.

The learner journey

1. 14 months on-programme – This is when the individual will learn the skills, knowledge and behaviours which will support them for their End-Point Assessment. The learner could partake in a combination of activities, such as classroom based sessions, mentoring, shadowing, bespoke resources and off-site visits in order to support their learning and development.

From 1 August 2025, apprentices must complete at least 187 hours of off-the-job (OTJ) training over a minimum of 8 months, with some standards requiring more for those without prior learning. Learn more about OTJ training hours.

2. Gateway – After the 14 months teaching and learning, you, your training provider and the learner will review the learners journey and decide whether it is the right time for the on-programme assessment.

3. End-Point Assessment – This is when your learner will need to demonstrate they have learnt the required knowledge, skills and behaviours, through an on demand knowledge test, a professional discussion, practical observation and business project.
