Supporting young people into roles through Kickstart

Learning Curve Group (LCG) are playing a vital role in supporting young people into roles through the Government’s Kickstart scheme.

Let's meet Georgia May Heads, Marketing Administrator, who is one of the first kickstart employees at LCG.

I graduated from Northumbria University in July 2020 with a First Class Honours Degree in Journalism. Whilst at university I had a part-time job in a hair salon as a receptionist and I also began to manage their social media accounts. However, I was eager to start my career in marketing as soon as I graduated. During my three years studying journalism I wanted to put myself in the best position possible for getting a job, so I did two successful periods of work experience at ITV Tyne Tees and Northumbria Police as a video editor. These work experience roles allowed me to spend time in ‘real life’ working environments in the media industry and I felt like they put me in a good position for leaving university.

When lockdown happened my work experience at Northumbria Police was cut short, I was furloughed from the hair salon and I had to complete my degree from home. I still managed to stay focused and achieve more than I thought I could whilst completing my dissertation from my kitchen table! When all my university work was handed in, the pressure to find a job hit hard. I found it extremely difficult to even get an interview during lockdown, never mind a job! I went to the Job Centre when I began to struggle to find a position on the mainstream job search websites that were relevant to the skills I had. I told my work coach the type of career I was hoping for, and within 3 weeks I was going for an interview for the Kickstart role that I am in today. I am absolutely over the moon to have this opportunity to work as a Marketing Administrator, as it is exactly what I wanted to go into after university.

The Kickstart scheme has many advantages for businesses as you can employ an individual on a part-time basis, for 6 months and see if they fit into your company culture, whilst being fully funded by the government. You will have access to a large pool of individuals, aged between 16-24, who may be recent graduates or have relevant experience to your business. After the six month scheme, your company can then make a decision on whether to employ the individual or take them on as an apprentice or trainee. Even if they are not right for your business after the six month period, then that person still walks away with vital work experience under their belt, in a better position than when they started.

I began my Kickstart Scheme in the marketing team on the 30th November and I was so excited to get started. During my first week I spent my time shadowing other members of the team and learning about their roles. I was given the task of creating graphics for social media adverts and composing emails to go out to business owners. I was able to use design software such as Canva, Adobe InDesign and Photoshop, which I was already familiar with after using them during my time at university and for my lifestyle blog.

The Kickstart Scheme has given me the chance to gain some valuable work experience in marketing, and has really given me the confidence boost that I needed to progress into the world of work. As soon as I walked into LCG I knew that this was a place I could see myself working. Everyone seemed happy and upbeat, and I was greeted by many friendly faces. My experience at the company so far has been nothing but positive and I have been made to feel extremely welcome and I have already learnt so much!

I wouldn’t have known about the Kickstart Scheme or this position if it wasn’t for the recommendation from my local Job Centre. I am extremely grateful to LCG and the Job Centre for offering me this amazing opportunity to take a step in the right direction.
